Camping With Bears and Young Children – Tips on Avoiding Bear Encounters While Camping With Kids

I recently traveled to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons with my family a few months ago. It was snowing and still cold when we arrived, and the Grizzly Bear activity was just beginning with the first sightings occurring the weekend we arrived. Having been a national park ranger for two seasons, I was aware of the dangers and preventative measures to take when cohabiting with bears. I had my own face-to-face encounters with black bears a few times as a Park Ranger in the backcountry, and was lucky enough to be able to walk away unscathed.

I was instantly terrified of this incredible beast, and suddenly inspired to learn everything I could about bears, including how to track them, their behaviors, and most importantly, how to protect myself from attack. During my first season, I worked with a Park Ranger who had previously been a Park Ranger at Glacier National Park in Montana. He was a burly man and had several deep scars on his face and arms. I’m ashamed to say I took a little too long a look at his very visible scars, but he was kind enough to share with me his encounter with the Grizzly Bear attack.

He was simply walking on one of the backcountry trails in Glacier National Park, when he came around a blind corner and was instantly attacked by a mother Grizzly with her cubs by her side. This man was at least 6’3″ or taller, and very tall, so I couldn’t even imagine the scene. He was quiet as he shared the details of his experience, so I could get a little more info from a real Grizzly Bear attack survivor to add to my arsenal of “what to do if attacked by a bear” knowledge.

He described how the Grizzly hit him with its razor sharp claws repeatedly until he finally fell. When he was finally on the floor, she continually tried to roll him onto his back so that his soft, meaty front was exposed. He didn’t comply and quickly rolled over into the fetal position to protect his belly. He was playing dead, making no sound, and continually turning to protect his stomach as the bear growled and attacked, blow after blow into his skin with its claws. She eventually grew tired of the game and left it for dead.

He was able to get help immediately and was extremely lucky to survive such a brutal Grizzly Bear attack that would have killed a lesser man. He told me in detail how he heard the deafening rumbles, felt the stinging pain of the blows against his body, and followed his instinctive response to protect his stomach. He never thought of death, only keeping his belly protected and surviving the swift attack until the bear left. He succeeded. Her survival attitude helped save her life.

Some bears attack when startled or when confronted by humans and stressed. Other attacks are due to the campsite not being clean and the smell of food or access to garbage cans being provided. If you can prevent a bear’s attention, that’s the best way to avoid a bear attack.

After learning about bears and gaining more understanding, I continue to camp to this day. Traveling in the wilderness with young children can make your hair stand on end pretty quickly, especially if you know what lives in the forest and what it is capable of. So I took the time to properly educate my children on what they should and shouldn’t do when visiting bear country. Although this serious topic obviously scared them at first, at age 8 and under, my children now have a very good understanding of how to behave and react to a bear encounter. Like me, they don’t fear bears, but have a deep respect for them.

I then heard about the recent Grizzly Bear attack just outside of Yellowstone National Park this week which left a female camper dead and 2 of her companions seriously injured. I was dumbfounded at the thought. It is always a shock to hear of such a devastating experience. I wondered about the details of my quest to try to understand Bears.

Understanding bears can be an adventure of a lifetime. You can learn a lot by buying a book or two from the library and start educating yourself. Bears become desperately hungry in the fall to prepare for a long period of winter hibernation. Campers setting up camp in bear country should consider that if they camp near a popular fishing spot for humans, it will also be a popular fishing spot for bears. Due to their size, strength, and general disposition, I’m always inclined to let the bears fish first and wait my turn – if you know what I mean.

If you’re catching a fish or cooking a delicious dinner over the campfire, it’s vitally important that you take off all the clothes you’re wearing during your campfire barbecue and put on clean clothes before heading out. retire to the tent for the night. Also, be sure to brush your teeth with unscented toothpaste. In fact, I use completely odorless flushing products including toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, deodorant, lotions, and other products that help keep you clean without making you smell like a delicious roast turkey. baked to directly attract wildlife. to your tent.

It is also essential that you keep a clean campsite. No matter how tired you are, be sure to clean up your campsite by washing all dishes away from your tent (at least 100 feet away), picking up food, empty cans, boxes, and other trash and throwing it away. storing high. a tree with your food storage. Don’t give bears a reason to come to you. Bears have an extraordinary ability to smell and can pick up a scent from over 4 miles away. Never bring food into your tent. Always clean your children’s hands and face and change their clothes before they retire to the tent. Make sure there are no foodstuffs, candies, toothpaste, or other items hidden in their pockets.

Be sure to inform the local information center or ranger station of your location and the time you plan to leave. Also let other family members know where you are going, when you plan to camp, and when you plan to leave. If you have a GPS, it is always a good idea to visit the area where you intend to camp in advance if possible, then provide your family with the GPS coordinates of your exact location if you are camping in the area. backcountry and not at a campsite. Otherwise, if you are camping at a campsite designated by Forest or Park Service, give your friends and family members your campsite number.

Finally, set up your campsite, play with your family remembering you’re out of town, look over your shoulder and enjoy the beauty of the wild country. If you have trouble sleeping at night, that’s fine. I’ve found that it’s always better to sleep with one eye open than to sleep like a rock when you’re in the desert. Bears and many other predators are most active at dusk and at night. Just because they call it a park doesn’t mean it’s a playground that meets all government safety requirements. The wilderness is wild and we are just guests when we visit and camp overnight. Follow a few basic guidelines, make it your routine when camping in Bear Country, and you, your family, and the bears will have a better time.
