Can DVD Guitar Lessons Teach You Everything A Guitar Lessons DVD Should
The Generic Guitarist
Some time ago I visited an old friend of mine, a guitar teacher and builder.
One of our favorite hobbies is listening to recordings of famous guitarists, just like other guitarists I guess.
There was an old record that was made for charity. It featured a whole bunch of rock guitarists soloing to one piece of music, each leading up to where the other ended.
On the back cover of the album was a list of featured guitarists, in the exact order they played.
The names of the guitarists escape me, it was so long ago and all that, but one thing became apparent; they all sounded exactly the same.
There was only one guitarist who stood out as instantly recognizable.
That guitarist was Yngwie Malmsteen.
Most guitarists learn to play the same or similar riffs, are influenced by the same great musicians who came before them, and end up sounding very similar to each other.
They become generic guitarists.
Wouldn’t you rather have your own unique style? I really hope so, since my influences are varied.
To further illustrate my point; Paul Gilbert had a guitar student who eventually took his place in the band “Racer X”.
I never listened to Racer X much, but from what I heard the guitar work sounded pretty much the same after it left.
DVD guitar lessons for beginners aren’t too much of a problem
If you buy a guitar lesson DVD as a beginner, as long as you know what kind of music you want to play, basic guitar lessons for beginners won’t really shape your style into a fixed style.
When you start to branch out a bit and expand beyond the fundamentals, you need to take a bit more variety in your approach.
Something I’ve always tried to do is easily find what my fingers don’t want to do and then run a few errands to practice.
I try to practice my own runs instead of learning a direct copy of someone else’s solo.
Finger exercises are great if they force your fingers to work in a different way than you are used to and comfortable with.
Any guitar teacher, whether it’s guitar lessons on DVD or a private tutor, should try to stimulate their own creativity on the fretboard.
The problem of having just one guitar lesson DVD
The guitar lessons on DVD that one receives usually have a teacher who gives you as much experience as possible. The problem is, it’s a teacher, a style, and you’re going to learn how to be a clone.
Being a clone isn’t such a bad thing though, we all do it. I don’t know any guitarist who isn’t a clone to one degree or another.
When I was starting to learn to play the guitar, I was excited if I played something that sounded like Jimi Hendrix.
These days, I’m glad I’m only a little like him.
A mix of styles and influences is a good thing, so don’t forget to mix it up a bit.
Listen to Bach and flamenco music, see what you come up with.
