Ten Fictional Broadcast Stations on TV and Songs
The most famous program director will probably turn seventy this year on Christmas Day. Actor Gary Sandy (born December 25, 1945) portrayed Andy Travis on Cincinnati’s fictional WKRP, the station that provided the title for the classic 1970s sitcom.
Most of the characters were eccentric, from disco jockeys called Dr. Johnny Fever and Venus Fly Trap to salesman Herb Tarlek to journalist Les Nesman to station manager Arthur Calson. Andy Travis, meanwhile, provided the serious side of the broadcast.
The actor himself grew up not far from Cincinnati, having attended Fairmount High School just south of Dayton. He then attended Wilmington College, a small campus about 45 minutes northeast of Queen City.
His role as program director helped make WKRP the most famous fictional broadcast station in the country, although there have been others who have become immortalized in pop culture, whether through television or the music. Here are nine more.
