The Nines DVD Review

Screenwriter John August (The Corpse Bride, Go, Big Fish) makes his directorial debut in The Nines, a triptych of shorts starring Ryan Reynolds (yes, he’s famous for Van Wilder) as three different but interconnected characters.

The first episode of The Nines begins with actor Gary (Reynolds) embarking on a post-relationship adventure and finding himself under house arrest in an unfamiliar environment. Gary is literally haunted by himself, number nine, and two women (Melissa McCarthy of the Gilmore Girls and Hope Davis of The Weather Man, also in recurring roles) who might both be looking for him.

Of course, nothing is as it seems and the fun is in putting together the clues to determine if Gary and his later “incarnations” – a screenwriter and video game creator – actually exist or if they are just different levels. of his conscience. And yes, you will know that at the end.

In addition to presenting an intriguing mystery, The Nines also maintains a level of suspense while managing to poke fun at itself, the television industry, and Hollywood in general. Reynolds is actually quite good in this more serious role, but still manages to give a few cheeky smiles while Melissa McCarthy manages to break free from the perky “Sookie” persona that made her famous.

Hope Davis is suitably creepy and presumably psychotic (and I mean that in a nice way). Guest appearances include Elle Fanning (Dakota’s sister) and David Denman (the American version of The Office).

In terms of extras, there’s an alternate ending, the usual commentary and deleted scenes, plus a hilarious short called God starring McCarthy as God’s best friend.

The Nines is an interesting head trip, not as complex as most but compelling nonetheless.
