10 Entertaining (Mainly) Horror DVDs to Kill 90 Minutes With If You’ve Got Nothing Else to Do!
The best thing about DVDs is that they’re a great way to kill a few hours if you have nothing else to do, as long as they’re entertaining! Entertaining doesn’t always mean good, although sometimes a movie is both entertaining and good. A few of the movies I’ve listed are actually good enough that you probably looked into renting or buying them on DVD on their own if you knew anything about them. Anyway, here’s my list for you in alphabetical order. The main criterion being that they provide entertainment. In fact, the total is 12 if you count an original and modern remake as 2 DVDs and I couldn’t remove another DVD from the list!
two thousand fools (1964) and/or 2001 Maniacs (2005) – 2001 Maniacs is actually the colorized remake starring Robert Englund of the classic 1964 horror film involving Civil War Revenge in the present! 2001 Maniacs is more manic and over the top and of course sick and gross and to me even more entertaining than the original because it amps up the action. The original is also quite good and you can actually watch both movies without getting bored.
Butterfly Effect (2004) – A really good sci-fi movie that for some reason seemed to get some backlash when it was released, probably because it starred Ashton Kutcher, who was actually pretty good. This movie looks like a badass “Ground Hog Day” villain and it seems to have been inspired by Ken Grimwood’s “Replay” novel.
cabin fever (2002) – This is the film that launched Eli Roth’s career before he made Hostel. Roth is one of my favorite directors and this movie is awesome sick and gross and no one has the idea of a “girl movie” unless the flesh-eating virus in a remote cabin shared by friends on vacation is your idea of romance
dead silence (2007) – I have to admit that I love “ventriloquist” horror movies. I found this movie quite entertaining although on the surface there is absolutely no redeeming social value. A great movie for those who like to be scared by dummies!
Lure (1946) – One of the most underrated and (relatively) unknown film noir classics featuring what has to be the wickedest, most unrepentant, ruthless and coldest female villain of all time . This film was 60 years ahead of its time. It involves the added bonus of bringing an executed murderer back to life, greed, betrayal, and more.
the devil comes out (1968) – This Hammer Horror film starring the great Christopher Lee, is one of the best films about Satan and wealthy devil worshipers of all time and is a perfect example of the serious yet campy acting style of the 1960s. 60 that can’t be captured in 2008 There’s simply no way a modern actor could seriously kick off this film’s dialogue with a straight face like the wonderful English actors did here in 1968. Some great huge British houses in the countryside and of course Satan.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003) – This movie is one of my ten best movies of all time. Along with the directorial debut of Rob Zombie, this to me is one of the most entertaining, sick and hilarious horror films of all time. The casting, acting, script are perfect. If this movie doesn’t entertain you, nothing will, Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding should have gotten an Oscar! This movie even has Rainn Wilson, Pre Office!
Kidnapped (2006 Complete TV Series) – This is actually the excellent 2006 13 episode Complete TV Series starring Jeremy Sisto about the kidnapping of a wealthy honcho’s son (Timothy Hutton) which is a thriller full of suspense with a huge amount of twists and turns that deserved a huge TV audience. “Kidnapped” was canceled before it could hit the level of let’s say a “24”, although the series’ first arc ended here. It would be worth renting it even if you didn’t just want to kill time and be entertained.
Shutter (2008) – This is a highly entertaining American knockoff of your staple modern Japanese horror film, starring the great Joshua Jackson. It’s strictly a grade “B” or “C” movie, but Joshua Jackson says some of the most despicable lines of ignorance in talkie history near the end of the film. It’s worth praising just for Joshua Jackson’s dialogue alone in the last 10 minutes, which is beyond amazing. The writer is a genius.
Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow (2004) – This is a sci-fi fantasy type movie starring Jude Law and I thought the cinematography and styling was absolutely amazing and I felt like I was in a Space 1940s Opera. I don’t understand why this movie wasn’t huge at the box office.
Waterfalls (2004) – A really fantastic TV series that deserved a better fate but it was on Fox, what are you waiting for? Only 4 episodes of this show aired before it was canceled, but this box set contains the full 13 episodes originally filmed. It was the best fantasy type fantasy TV show I’ve ever seen with great acting directed by the amazing Caroline Dhavernas who this show should have made a star of, great writing and directing.
