LG BD590 Blu-Ray Player Review
This year, LG’s main Blu-Ray player is the BD590. Like last year’s model, the highly successful BD390, LG has incorporated a wide range of features and functions into the BD590 player. The key feature that will separate the BD590 from all other Blu-Ray players is its 250GB internal hard drive. It is the first player to incorporate such functionality into a Blu-Ray player.
The design of the DB590 is similar to that of the DB390. LG has made the BD590 thinner and less chunky. A nice achievement considering the addition of a 250GB hard drive. There’s a glossy front panel that folds down automatically when you want to eject a disc. Next to the output tray, under the front panel, you have a few control buttons and a USB port. Other control buttons, such as power and eject, are located on the front of the drive and are always accessible.
LG has redesigned the graphical user interface (GUI) of previous models. You now have to make your selections on a screen by selecting images that look like floating cubes. Although not difficult, it could have been much simpler. For example, in the Netcast section, you can choose from a selection of non-moving blocks. This graphical interface is simple and straightforward.
Video quality: Blu-Ray disc playback on the BD590 is excellent. Giving you clear and crisp images. Video connections can be made via the HDMI, Component or Composite outputs. All are located on the back of the player. The HDMI is in version 1.3 and will offer you the best image quality in Full HD 1080p. The LG BD590 can convert all your DVDs to 1080p.
Audio quality: The sound is excellent on the LG BD590. You can connect in one of the following ways: HDMI, digital audio (optical, coaxial) or analog 2.0 channels. All located on the back of the player. It offers internal audio decoding for all high resolution Dolby and DTS audio formats. Unfortunately, SACD and DVD-Audio discs are not supported by this player. It also doesn’t have 7.1 analog outputs like last year’s BD390.
You have access to LG’s NetCast Entertainment, which offers a wide range of quality online content and services. You can access Netflix, CinemaNow, VUDU, YouTube, Pandora, Picasa, AccuWeather and many more. Of course, with the addition of the 250GB hard drive, you can download and store movies you’ve purchased from places like VUDU. The hard drive is also ideal for BD-Live content. Make it easier to access additional features offered on Blu-Ray discs. Such as movie scenes, movie trailers, live commentary, live chat and much more.
You will need to connect to the Internet to take advantage of these features. You can connect through the Ethernet port or you can use the built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi connection makes it easy to access the online material available to you. Another interesting feature is that the LG BD590 Blu-Ray player is DLNA (Home Link) compatible. This means that it is able to stream music, videos and photos located on a network connected computer or USB drive directly to your TV. The Home Link playable content format includes the following: DivX/DivX HD, MPEG2 TS/PS, MPEG1 SS, XVID, MKV, AVI, WMA, MP3, AC3, AAC, JPEG, PNG.
A new feature of the LG BD590 is its ability to rip CDs and store them directly on the internal hard drive. In the CD Archive menu, you can choose between bitrates of 128kbps, 192kbps, 320Kbps or Lossless. This process is made even easier with the help of the Blu-Ray player’s MusicID feature which is handled by Gracenote. Gracenotes provides instant access to details about artists, track listings, albums, and more. You will need to be connected to the internet to use Gracenotes MusicID.
One feature that the LG BD590 lacks, and which will be present on most major Blu-Ray players released this year, is 3D Blu-Ray playback. While the BD590’s competitors may have this feature, LG hopes its 250GB hard drive and CD ripping function will be more appealing to consumers. Especially since consumers will not have to wait to use them. With 3D Blu-Ray players, consumers will have additional costs for 3D TVs, glasses, and 3D content. Which won’t really be available significantly until next year.
