This raises the question of how to bridge the gap so that the positive impact of technology on learning is not limited to those who have the most access to it. We believe educational DVDs go a long way in improving access to educational technology for the average household.

Bridging the Gap: Integrating Other Technologies

Access to computers and the Internet in the child’s home is not the only factor we need to consider. We need to look at it from two other angles: 1) other technologies the student may have access to and 2) the integration of ALL forms of educational technology into the classroom.

Due to the lower cost, many more households own DVD players than computers, likely for entertainment purposes. Almost all computers now also include DVD drives. Integrating educational DVDs into the classroom and encouraging their use at home will allow more students to access them, and while this will not close the gap entirely, it seems to be obvious in order to do so.

Incorporate educational DVDs

The digital format of educational DVDs provides the user with a degree of access and control over video presentation content that was not possible with traditional VHS. DVD technology allows instant access to video segments through the use of images and adds other options that enhance lessons and help students become active learners. We all know that students are more likely to be active learners if we can involve them in their work. Here are some benefits of using DVDs in the classroom.

o Chapter function allows access to content divided into related segments

o Additional features, such as interviews with the main actors or the director, are often included

o If the content is historical in nature, actual news footage or historical commentary on the event may be included

o Some DVDs offer subtitles or captioned narration

o Most educational DVDs are inexpensive and do not degrade over time (like VHS), allowing them to be reused for many years, making them even more economical

o Allows students who need extra help to repeat only the necessary “chapters” and study at their own pace
