OTT Platform Watch: Movie Bell Bottom Disappoints, Series Mumbai Diaries 26/11 Well Made, And More!
I’ve been a cinephile since childhood, also so passionate that I wanted to be a filmmaker and I actually tried in that direction to some extent, while nurturing that ambition. And I’ve always enjoyed movies on the big screens, including the silver screens of the traditional single-screen movie theaters of yore that ideally matched the 35mm film format and whenever the occasional 70mm movies came along, the images spilled over the sides. I find it very tragic, of course out of all proportion to the horrors and suffering of people due to the pandemic, that for over 18 months now I have been deprived of normal cinema visits and really miss the action. OTT (Over the Top) streaming platforms have therefore become the only alternative, for people like me who are entirely focused on proper COVID-19 behavior and safety. Therefore, I have watched a lot on such a platform since the first lockdown – always selecting the best of the films available and the most discussed series – but limited to a single platform because I don’t want to hurt myself ears with constant use of earphones. A good number of films are from the Golden Age and most modern films need not be mentioned. However, recently I had seen three modern movies and web series that I would like to talk about a bit. latest bollywood movie The lower end of the bell (2021) is one of them that attracted me because of the name which was fashionable in our college days, and the film was in line with the effective Indian spy thrillers that I have enjoyed a lot in recent years in modern theaters.
Movie hero Akshay Kumar is one more attraction as he has been cast in several hit thrillers directed by filmmaker Neeraj Pandey like Special 26 (2013), Baby (2015), Roustom (2016) and Naam Shabana (2017). Of course, this movie The lower end of the bell isn’t one of its own, but like I said, the format sounded exciting. Watching the film, I was disappointed overall: there was an explosive plot that was terribly affected by an inept script. The basic theme of the film, an Indian Airlines plane hijacking drama (based on a real event that occurred during the last term of then-Prime Minister of India, the late Indira Gandhi.), was unnecessarily altered by the extended flashbacks, and finally when the plot seemed to pick up again, there wasn’t enough time to bring it to a worthy climax. Although the film has similarities to another successful hijacking thriller, Zameen (2003) directed by Rohit Shetty, its ultimate climax turned out to be very simplistic and somewhat rushed.
The film undoubtedly has its octane moments with Agent RAW (Research and Analysis Wing), played by Akshay Kumar whose code name is The lower end of the bell, to investigations and raids on terrorist lairs. His RAW boss, indeed well played by Adil Hussain, is only the pale shadow of the intelligence boss in Baby played by Danny Denzongpa who almost lived through supercharged drama and action. The hijacker characters also haven’t received enough attention, not all of which have managed to scare viewers like they have in movies like Baby and Neerja (2016), the latter very well directed by Ram Madhvani. The Pakistani intelligence counterpart was also shown halfheartedly. The latest twist involving Akshay’s wife, played by Vaani Kapoor, sharing a secret with the RAW boss was only superficial. Some reviewers also point to factual errors, but these can be ignored as this is ultimately a work of fiction. Therefore, the movie The lower end of the bell directed by Ranjit Tiwari, while well-handled to some degree, fails to be as engrossing and engrossing as the films of the same genre mentioned here.
A surprise was in store when the new OTT web series Mumbai Newspapers 26/11, directed by well-known filmmaker Nikhil Advani, became available on air. Having experienced every harrowing moment of this horrific Mumbai terrorist attack on November 26, 2008 through my work in the media, anything about this attack has always caught my attention. However, all of the films made about the attack so far have been lame attempts, failing to do justice to the unleashed terror. So I started watching episode 9 Mumbai Newspapers 26/11 immediately, and to my surprise, I found it very gripping and doing full justice to the real fear that victims and people in general still feel for the first time. Although it’s done from a medical perspective, telling the story of a Mumbai hospital that ultimately suffered the terrorist attack, nearly every horrific moment in the three-day Reign of Fear is skillfully captured and presented. Aided by a powerful script, the characters, the most important of whom are the doctors and hospital staff, are played with excellent ease and brilliant performances by all the actors.
The web series also highlighted the much-discussed “media involvement” that gave constant leads to the Pakistani terror control room which thus guided terrorists into action in Mumbai, and the tragedy unleashed by an overzealous journalist in this work of fiction. was honest and efficient. If the timeline of the actual series of events was not followed in detail, it was never felt by watching, and again, ultimately being a work of fiction, such a complaint is unnecessary. . More positively, the series does not indulge in any bloody violence or its glorification and explicit sexuality which has been the hallmark of almost all OTT web series aired in India. In all, the Mumbai Newspapers 26/11 is totally watchable for all types of viewers of all ages who want to feel the reality of the dastardly terrorist attack again.
Finally a Hollywood movie Those who want me dead (2021), directed by Taylor Sheridan. With Angelina Jolie in the lead and an interesting smokescreen story for wildfires, I watched the movie as soon as it aired on my subscribed OTT platform. To my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it, not finding a single moment of letting up in this slick thriller. What I found refreshing was that the film followed the ’90s thriller genre religiously and to exactness with an impeccably tight script. Lately, most Hollywood movies have been dedicated to dealing with super visual effects, showing either destructive monsters or disasters or unimaginable sci-fi stories mainly covering the outside world and the universe. It sort of confirmed my long-held wish that Hollywood would return to basic human dramas that are still acceptable around the world. Anyone with the mindset of this mere mortal should therefore not fail to watch Those who want me dead at all costs. Those who can visit theaters safely are the lucky ones.
