A Quick Primer On Soundbars
Surround sound adds an exciting dimension to your home theater experience. However, in many cases it is not possible to accommodate the satellite speakers needed to create surround effects. There may be difficulty running cables to the speakers, or there may not be enough space to fit them all in. Without surround sound, you can only get half the experience. This is where soundbars come in.
A soundbar is a specially designed speaker enclosure that creates a stereo effect from a single speaker. They are much wider than they are tall. This is partly for acoustic reasons and to achieve the convenience of being able to mount the speaker just above or below a screen, typically flat screen televisions. Due to space constraints, many HDTVs often have smaller speakers, resulting in poor audio quality and intelligibility.
How do soundbars achieve this?
A single soundbar replaces multiple speakers. A standard surround sound system includes three speakers in the front (left, center and right) and 2 or 4 speakers in the back, for surround effects. A three-channel soundbar replaces the three front speakers. However, you still need the rear speakers for some EFX.
A 5-channel soundbar can do it all with full surround sound from a single, easy-to-install speaker. Soundbars use multiple speaker arrays and sophisticated electronic signal processing to simulate surround effects, including rear channels. It is truly remarkable how a single speaker can reproduce sound with great fidelity.
What does powered or unpowered mean in soundbars?
A powered/active soundbar is a completely self-contained surround sound system that connects directly to your home theater TV, DVD, Blu-ray player and video game. A powered soundbar has two main advantages. First, there is no need to buy and install more equipment. Everything you need ships in the box. That’s a pretty strong advantage. Second, the built-in amplification and processing are specially matched to the soundbar’s enclosure design, raising its sonic performance to higher levels.
A non-powered/passive soundbar connects to a home theater receiver just like regular speakers, but there’s only one. If you already own a home theater receiver, an unpowered soundbar might make the most sense. And even if you don’t already have a home theater receiver, an unpowered soundbar allows you to purchase a separate receiver that may fit your room and components better than a powered soundbar.
