Toshiba Has HD-DVD-R Ready for Mass Production
The time has come for Toshiba and Nec, the major backers of the HD-DVD format, to announce that they are ready for the mass production of write-once HD-DVD-R discs.
Their drives can store 15 GB of data and should be available to consumers in the first half of next year, at the same time as HD-DVD recorders and PC players will also hit the market.
As we all know, HD-DVD is in a tight competition with Blu-ray for the “format of the future” title, which also means a multi-billion dollar market as the prize for the winner.
Similar blue laser technology remains at the heart of both formats, as the blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red lasers used in current DVD equipment, allowing discs to store data at the higher densities needed for high definition television and movies.
The advantage of the HD-DVD-R disc over its main competitor, the Blu-ray disc, is that it has the same disc structure as the regular DVD and can therefore be manufactured using the same production lines. This, for DVD manufacturers, means they can start mass producing HD-DVD-Rs at full speed, immediately, without too much extra cost. A replacement stamp is of course required and the old dye should be replaced with a blue light sensitive resin dye. The new dye was developed in a joint project of Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratories, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim and Toshiba Corporation.
But at the same time, the Blu-ray competitor has its own advantages, such as superior storage capacity. Toshiba says it works on this aspect as well, but moving from single-layer discs written at 1x speed to 30GB dual-layer discs could take several years, spokespersons said. Toshiba has promised to introduce 20GB HD-DVD-RW discs around this time next year.
So far, the Blu-ray Disc Association and the HD DVD Promotion Group have refused to compromise in favor of a unified hybrid format for future DVD.
