How to Rip a DVD in Windows 7

Rip DVD – how hard could it be? It must be like ripping a music CD! That was my impression when I decided to try it! However, once I tried many of the instructions that show up in a Google search, I realized it wasn’t such an easy piece of cake. Maybe because I was using Windows 7 and most of the procedures were written with Windows XP in mind. So I explored several options and finally found success – using free software available on the internet.

These are the steps that ultimately worked.

1) DECRYPTION: DVD43 works like a charm. The program has been available for quite some time now – just by searching for its name. Once installed, it sits in the Windows system tray as a yellow smiley. When an encrypted DVD is loaded, it starts running and turns green when ready. It even plays region-incompatible DVDs. (Note: This step is not necessary for unencrypted DVDs.)

2) COPY THE DVD FILES: It is probably better to copy the DVD Video files, contained in the VIDEO_TS folder, to a hard disk, rather than rip directly. This is because ripping can take a long time and cause the disk to spin continuously for hours, which might not be a good thing.

3) CONVERSION TO AVI (Xvid/DivX): The key step. After trying various options, the one that worked best for me was AutoGK. It is available from various sources and you can get it by searching its name on any search engine. Download and install the latest version.

The program has a simple interface. You must select the IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder that corresponds to the main program/movie on the DVD as input. It’s easy because this IFO file will have the maximum number of matching VOB files. Next, select the appropriate audio track and subtitle track (optional).

It is better to specify “output size” rather than “target quality”. This leads to 2-pass encoding, which results in better quality. A standard length movie should compress well to a size of 1-2 CDs (700-1400MB). Finding the perfect size – based on DVD length and quality – will get better with a little practice!

Finally, press “Add to Work” and “Start”. You will soon have your own ripped AVI file. Enjoy!
