The Tape to DVD Transfer Tutorial

Do you have old video tapes containing your precious family memories with no way to watch them? You can have small, bigger, big and large – also called mini-DV, 8mm/Hi-8, VHS-C and VHS tapes.

Well, the purpose of this article is to give you some tips and advice, or at least explain the different options you have for transferring your videotapes from the original tape format, which degrades a little more each day, and preserve these magical moments. on DVD or digital file. I’ll try not to get “too technical” and explain the choices in the simplest and simplest terms.

If you have no interest in doing it yourself, skip to the last section for recommendations on where/how to transfer your videotapes to DVD.

VHS to DVD transfer.

VHS cassettes are the largest tape size of the bunch and were the standard way to watch movies on your home entertainment system before DVD hit the scene. VHS tapes play in VCRs. The problem is that many people got rid of their VCR once DVD became the norm. As for home movie recordings, there were video cameras that recorded directly onto full-size VHS tapes, and other cameras that recorded onto other tape formats (see above) that could have later be “dubbed” onto a VHS tape for viewing.

To transfer VHS tapes to DVD, there are several options:

1. Option 1. A dual VCR/DVD dubbing deck.

I. The advantages: Easy to use. An acceptable transfer, but not of optimal quality.

II. Cons: Unfortunately, there are a few.

a. Price. A decent VCR/DVD deck costs a few hundred dollars and some extra gear you might not really want or plan to use for long. Is there room in your entertainment component cabinet? Or at the home office?

b. No master. If anything happens to the DVD you created from the copy of the VHS tape, i.e. it gets scratched and stops playing or you lose it, etc., you don’t have no master to create another DVD. You would need to create a brand new DVD by transferring the original VHS tape back to your machine. A complete real-time repetition of the process. And that means you can’t (or shouldn’t) get rid of the original VHS tape, so you haven’t consolidated at all! You should always keep that big box of VHS tapes, just in case you need to transfer it again.

vs. It only works easily for VHS tapes. You can do a similar process for other tape formats (8mm, mini-DV, etc.) by connecting your video camera’s output to the input of a DVD recorder – machine to machine, and create a DVD in the same way as the combined machine. The other downside here is an understanding of the cables needed to connect the two (more on that in a future post).

2. Option 2. Tape Machine(s), Computer and Signal Conversion Hardware and Software.

I. Pros: It’s the best way to convert your tapes to DVD, and it’s true for all the different tape formats above, not just VHS. Unlike option 1, you’ll have one master burn file that will allow you to create as many DVDs as you want, so you’re always protected should anything happen to the DVD. It also allows you to have a digital file that can be played on your computer and allows editing options, should you wish to edit footage from pieces of your home movies. DVDs created from this process can also allow for the addition of a DVD menu and provide the ability to create individual chapters of the footage that was on your tape, allowing you to easily jump to different sections of the DVD, rather than just read it. from the beginning and limited to fast forward/backward on your DVD player.

II. Cons: Well, the description line for option 2 says it all. You need a lot of equipment, which can be quite expensive, and the process is complicated and time-consuming. What you need is a cassette player to play the video tape, such as a VCR if your tapes are VHS, or a deck that plays Hi-8, mini-DV, etc. OR the video camera itself you recorded with can function as a playback machine, an analog-to-digital signal converter, a computer, and a DVD burner (which can be built into your computer or a separate component).

As a basic preview, the tape player reads the tape and the signal converter converts the signal into digital information, resulting in a file such as AVI, Mpeg4 or .MOV. Then the file can be added to applications to create and burn a DVD, allowing the addition of menus, chapters, images, etc. Once the main burning file is created, an unlimited number of DVDs can be burned from this file. Look for an upcoming article for a step-by-step tutorial of this process and the equipment options available to you.

Don’t want to get into tape to DVD transfers but wonder where you can pay to do it for you?

1. Large chain stores. There are a few chain stores that offer tape to DVD transfer services, however, there are some downsides. First, these channels send your tapes to another facility. Your tapes may have recorded moments from your personal journeys, but did you really expect your tapes to go on adventures themselves? The services offered by these factory outlets are competent, but very simple with only a few creative options. Chapter design is often limited to providing only a still image rather than animated sequences of your chapters. Acceptable, but limited, as far as the DVD product is concerned.

2. The best option is an experienced local tape to DVD transfer company that specializes in transferring video tapes to DVDs or digital files. These companies take great care in transferring your tapes, will ensure the quality of your transfers by maximizing and “dialing” the signal that comes out of your tape, to pick up the best signal (remember, tapes degrade with time ), and will “clean up” the material on the strips, meaning they will remove blurry snow or blank blue screens at the beginning, or between clips in the middle or end. A good company will also offer creative, easy-to-navigate menus and a chapter design with animated sequences, which will result in a very easy to use and enjoyable DVD of your treasured home movies.
