After the loss of a loved one, we are thrown into the chaos of grief, struggling aimlessly in the swell of pain and emotions that overwhelm us. Every day seems like a bad day.

Even many years later, we may have days when the strain of adaptation, the strain of daily demands, and the strain of life become too great to bear for any length of time. We give in and crumble, allowing ourselves to be engulfed and dragged down by our emotional burdens.

When we are in this place, it is difficult to find a way out, to see the light of day and to be able to breathe fresh air again. Here are some tips to help you navigate the black hole – 20 ways to get through your bad days.

Feel it for a while

indulge – yes wallow. Sometimes we just have to give ourselves permission to be in the quagmire of how we feel and what we experience. We must be engulfed in our great sorrow and pain that hurts like nothing on earth. We need to feel the depth of our anguish for ourselves, our deep pain for all that we are going through so that we can open our eyes to another day.

Set a timer – yes you can wallow but not forever. It’s a dark, self-centered place that we don’t want to stay in forever. Give yourself a time limit – minutes or hours, maybe all day. Set boundaries that support you.

Move – any type of movement is good. If it comes after a good bath, it can be as simple as getting out of bed. It can be walking around the block or stretching. Activity is good for the whole body. Start where you are and go from there.

Use Widgets

Smartphone – find an app that inspires you, something to cheer you up when you’re feeling down. It can be inspirational or faith-based quotes or nature sounds.

iPads/tablets – there’s an incredible array of things you can get these days to distract and entertain you, to get you out of the gloom that can descend. I recently added the TED app to my iPad. TED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ideas worth spreading. In their iPad app, there are hundreds of presentations from their conferences that you can watch on bad days or when sleep is slipping away.

Playlists – find your favorite music and put it in playlists according to your mood. Have one for dark days, music that kicks you up a notch. Have one for walking. Have one for sleeping. You can even get special earphone sleeping strips for added comfort.

Comforting treats

Soft tissue – our poor noses come to be manhandled when we are in mourning. We have never cried so much. So buy extra soft tissues to have on hand. A little sweetness goes a long way when we feel miserable.

snuggle up – buy a nice soft and cozy throw to dive into. There’s something about being warm and covered that makes us feel protected and cared for. It’s a hug with us, for ourselves.

Food– It’s not a good thing to dive into the closet when we’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, but we all do it and it can be a short-term emotional boost. Save it for when you need it most. We all have our favourites, for me it’s chocolate based – hot drinks, chocolates or pudding.

Heat – have you noticed how much better you feel when the sun is shining and you feel warm and comfortable? Where you can, get out in the sun or warm yourself by the fire and let the heat thaw out the pain in your heart a little.

Bathe – immersing yourself in the warmth of a scented bath or feeling the hot water of a shower running over us can be very soothing. Pair it with a beautiful soap or oil to feel nurtured and special.

To laugh – something that can seem impossible when you’re in the depths of despair. Laughing is healthy and there’s nothing to feel bad about. We all need a little relief, a break and laughter can go a long way in releasing the tension we hold tightly. Watch this laughter yoga video or keep a few DVDs or tapes handy that you know you’ll laugh at. It can do so much to break open the shell of despair that weighs heavily on your heart.

Feed your mind – Have a few books, DVDs or tapes that inspire you in some way. You might have some that you turn to again and again. If not, start collecting a few items that you can use during those tough days. To comfort, inspire and give you hope.

A good thing – it can be the hardest thing in the world to be grateful for anything when you’ve lost someone you love so much. Yet I believe that if we try and practice, we can find our good thing that becomes another and another. It connects us to the polar opposite of our loss and points us towards hope and healing.

Your box of goodies – when you’re having a bad day, give yourself a fighting chance and know what makes you feel better. It can be a photo or a piece of jewelry. It could be a gift certificate you bought some time ago for a day like today. It could be a beautiful perfume or a bouquet of your favorite flowers. Keep them in your real or imagined box and draw from them when you need them.

Stay connected

Phone a friend – evaluate how you feel. Sometimes we want to talk, sometimes not. We may not have close friends or family we can call, but we may be able to connect in other ways. Grieving is a very lonely and isolating experience. We all have times when we need support and need to know that we are not the only ones feeling this.

Acquire help – most bereavement support groups have contact lists where you can ask for help. If you feel suicidal in any way, please get immediate help from your doctor, hospital or local emergency help line. The internet never sleeps and can be of great support and reassurance to those in any part of the world who need to connect with someone else who is grieving.

Ask for help – I often say that although there are many who can walk alongside us, we are the only ones who can do the work, the hard work of grieving and healing. We are the only ones who can do what it takes to live again. We are the only ones who can ask for help to support us in our grief. We may have gone beyond our ability to help ourselves or what we’ve tried just doesn’t work. It’s time to try something different. Never be afraid to ask for help, it could be a turning point for you.

Go somewhere different

Treat yourself – our homes can become our safety net, our sanctuary, especially when we feel so sad. Getting out of the house and being in a different place gets your body moving, but it can also change your mood. Make it nice, take you somewhere nice. Break the mold.

Sit with the birds – nature is incredibly restorative and healing. Sit outside for 10 minutes with a cup of tea or go for a walk in a nearby park. Listen to the sounds of nature; let it be a balm for your soul. Find a beautiful image from our wonderful world to adorn your desk or sit on your table. Buy a water fountain and be surrounded by the sounds of nature in your daily life.

go visit – Where have you always wanted to go? See it in your mind, imagine it. Bring it to life with images. Read about it, think about it, and plan for it. Having something to look forward to can help us deal with the difficulties we are going through right now. It might not be a long-held dream, it might be a one or two night trip, vacation, or something you’ve always wanted to do.

Try on a few for size; see if they are right for you. Otherwise, come on your own. You help yourself as only you can by finding what works for you and then doing it.
